FINANCIAL ADVANTAGE
Additional Benefits For Virginian Veterans
As a Veteran in Virginia, you may qualify for valuable state and federal benefits that can improve your financial security, reduce education costs, and provide long-term support for you and your family. Understanding available Virginia disabled veteran benefits can help you maximize the compensation and resources you’ve earned through your service. The Virginia Department of Veterans Services (DVS) administers many of these programs.
Tax Relief
Property Tax Exemptions for Veterans in Virginia
- The real property of any veteran rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as having a 100% service-connected, permanent, and total disability is exempt from taxation. Veterans rated less than 100% but compensated at the 100% rate due to individual unemployability and rated permanent and total also qualify.
- Unremarried surviving spouses of qualifying 100% disabled veterans retain the exemption on their principal residence. Surviving spouses of service members who died in the line of duty may also receive a similar exemption on their principal residence, provided they do not remarry.
Family Tuition Assistance
Education Benefits for Virginia Veterans
- Eligible spouses and children of veterans who were killed, declared POW/MIA, or became permanently and totally disabled may receive a waiver of tuition and mandatory fees at Virginia public colleges and universities for up to four years. A stipend of up to $1,800 annually for room, board, books, and supplies may be available when funding allows. Applicants must meet residency rules and be accepted by the school.
- Active-duty military, National Guard members, veterans, and their spouses or dependent children qualify for resident tuition rates at Virginia public colleges and universities. Virginia waives the standard one-year residency requirement for veterans who move to and remain in the state during their course of study.
Home Financing
Home Loan Benefits for Eligible Veterans
- Eligible veterans, service members, and surviving spouses can obtain VA-guaranteed home loans for purchase, construction, improvement, or refinance of a primary residence.
- The Virginia Department of Veterans Services operates state veterans care centers that provide skilled nursing, memory care, assisted living, and long-term care services for eligible veterans.
