FINANCIAL ADVANTAGE
Additional Benefits For North Carolina Veterans
As a Veteran in North Carolina, you may qualify for valuable state and federal benefits that can improve your financial security, reduce education costs, and provide long-term support for you and your family. Understanding available North Carolina disabled veteran benefits can help you maximize the compensation and resources you’ve earned through your service. The North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) administers many of these programs. Military retirement pay is generally not taxed by the state under qualifying service conditions.
Tax Relief
Property Tax Exemptions for Veterans in North Carolina
- The first $45,000 of the appraised value of the primary residence is excluded from property taxation for qualifying veterans. Eligibility requires an honorable or under honorable conditions discharge and either a permanent and total (100%) service-connected disability rating from the VA or receipt of benefits for specially adapted housing under 38 U.S.C. § 2101. There is no age or income requirement.
- Never-remarried surviving spouses of veterans who had a permanent and total service-connected disability, received specially adapted housing benefits, or died as a result of a service-connected condition may qualify for the same $45,000 homestead exclusion.
Family Tuition Assistance
Education Benefits for North Carolina Veterans
- Eligible children of certain wartime veterans may receive scholarships covering free tuition, certain mandatory fees, and (in some classes) room and board allowances at North Carolina public institutions. Scholarships generally provide up to eight academic semesters that must be used within eight years.
- Veterans eligible for VA education benefits who enroll within three years of service and establish residency in North Carolina during their studies, as well as active-duty personnel and their dependents stationed in the state, may qualify for resident (in-state) tuition at public colleges and universities. Public institutions also award academic credit for military training and experience.
Home Financing
Home Loan Benefits for Eligible Veterans
- Eligible veterans can access VA-guaranteed home loans (often with no down payment) for purchase or refinance. The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency also offers homebuyer programs that may be combined with VA loans, including the NC Home Advantage Mortgage and eligible down payment assistance programs.
- DMVA operates state veterans homes offering skilled nursing care. These provide long-term care options for eligible veterans.
