Additional Benefits For Montana Veterans
Montana Veterans and their families may qualify for valuable benefits that reduce property taxes, lower higher-education expenses, and make purchasing a home more affordable. Understanding the Montana disabled Veteran benefits available to you—from property tax assistance to tuition waivers and military mortgage programs—can help you make the most of the benefits you’ve earned through military service.
Tax Relief
Property Tax Benefits for Veterans in Montana
- Qualifying disabled Veterans can receive a substantial reduction in their residential property tax rate. Montana's Disabled Veteran Assistance Program (MDV) provides eligible Veterans who are rated or compensated by the VA at the 100% service-connected disability rate with a reduction of 50%, 70%, 80%, or 100% of the normal property tax rate, depending on household income and marital status.
- Eligible surviving spouses can also receive property tax assistance. Unmarried surviving spouses of qualifying disabled Veterans, including certain Veterans who died on active duty or from a service-connected disability, may receive the benefit. Applicants must meet income requirements, own or be purchasing the home, and occupy it as their primary residence for at least seven months of the year.
Family Tuition Assistance
Education Benefits for Montana Veterans & Families
- Children of certain deceased service members can receive undergraduate tuition waivers. Montana's War Orphans Tuition Waiver assists eligible Montana residents age 25 or younger whose military parent died during qualifying service connected to World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, or Afghanistan. The waiver covers undergraduate tuition at participating Montana University System institutions but does not cover fees.
- Honorably discharged Veterans may also qualify for tuition assistance. Montana's Honorably Discharged Veteran Tuition Waiver helps eligible resident Veterans whose federal VA education benefits have expired or been exhausted. The waiver covers remaining qualifying resident tuition after other grants and scholarships are applied, subject to enrollment, discharge, and academic-progress requirements.
Home Financing
Home Loan Benefits for Montana Veterans
- Montana offers a dedicated mortgage program with reduced interest rates for Veterans. The Montana Veterans' Home Loan Program provides qualifying Veterans and military service members with a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage at one percentage point below the Montana Board of Housing's Regular Bond Loan Program rate. The program does not impose income, asset, or purchase-price limits, although maximum loan amounts and other requirements apply.
- Eligible military homebuyers can access financing through Montana's state housing program. The Veterans' Home Loan Program serves qualifying Montana residents who have never previously owned a primary residence. Applicants must complete an approved homebuyer education course and generally contribute at least $2,500 of their own funds. Loans are offered through participating lenders, subject to underwriting requirements and available program funding.
