Additional Benefits For Arizona Veterans
As a Veteran in Arizona, you may qualify for valuable state and federal benefits that can improve your financial security, reduce education costs, and provide long-term support for you and your family. The Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services (ADVS) administers many of these programs. Arizona does not tax active-duty military pay or certain military retirement/pension income.
Tax Relief
Property Tax Exemptions for Veterans in Arizona
- Honorably discharged Arizona resident veterans with a service- or nonservice-connected disability may exempt a portion of the assessed value of their property (the maximum exemption amount is adjusted annually for inflation; for tax year 2026 it is listed by some counties at approximately $4,873 of assessed value, multiplied by the VA disability percentage for partial ratings). 100% disabled veterans may receive the full available exemption amount. Eligibility is subject to assessed valuation and household income limits (also adjusted annually). Apply through your county assessor.
- The same statutory framework provides property tax exemptions for qualifying widows/widowers and persons with total and permanent disabilities (subject to the same assessed-value and income limits). These categories generally cannot be stacked with the disabled-veteran exemption.
Family Tuition Assistance
Education Benefits for Arizona Veterans
- Eligible veterans (and certain spouses/dependents) discharged within the last 36 months from a period of active duty of 90 days or longer who are using VA Chapter 30 or Chapter 33 benefits may be granted immediate Arizona residency for tuition purposes at public institutions, resulting in in-state rates.
- Qualifying veterans who received a Purple Heart, were Arizona residents or stationed in Arizona at the time of the injury, and have a VA disability rating of 50% or higher may have tuition waived for credits needed to obtain an undergraduate degree at Arizona public universities or community colleges. Also eligible in certain cases are unremarried spouses and dependent children of service members killed in the line of duty, and certain Arizona National Guard members who received a Purple Heart or were medically discharged due to qualifying injuries.
Home Financing
Home Loan Benefits for Eligible Veterans
- Eligible veterans, service members, and surviving spouses can obtain VA-guaranteed home loans (often with no down payment required by the VA, competitive rates, limited closing costs, and no private mortgage insurance) for purchase, construction, improvement, or refinance of a primary residence through private lenders. ADVS provides navigation assistance.
- ADVS operates multiple Medicare-certified skilled-nursing facilities that provide long-term skilled nursing, memory care, and rehabilitative services for eligible Arizona veterans and, in some cases, dependent/surviving spouses.
