From Combat to Cardboard: How Zach Bell Uses Humor and Advocacy to Empower Veterans
Zach Bell’s path from Marine Infantryman to viral sensation wasn’t something he mapped out. Yet, through creative resilience and a passion for supporting Veterans, Zach—better known as “Veteran With A Sign”—has become a powerful voice for the Military and Veteran community.
A Mission Beyond the Uniform
After enlisting in 2007, Zach served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, completing two combat deployments to Afghanistan. While he earned multiple promotions and leadership roles in the Infantry, the high cost on his family ultimately led him to transition to civilian life in 2011.
“There wasn’t a map on how to be a Veteran,” Zach recalled. “Nobody handed me a manual for navigating benefits or finding a new sense of purpose.”
That uncertainty led Zach into the nonprofit world, where he gained industry knowledge and witnessed firsthand the gaps Veterans face, especially around understanding their benefits.
The Birth of ‘Veteran With A Sign’
During the height of the 2020 lockdowns, Zach decided to channel his creativity. Inspired by social media trends, his background in writing, and a desire to connect with fellow Veterans, Zach began posting photos holding humorous and thought-provoking cardboard signs.
“I just started writing signs and putting them out there,” Zach shared. “At first, it was chaotic. But slowly, people started connecting with the messages, and it grew.”
His posts range from lighthearted takes on military life to serious calls for mental health awareness, creating a platform that balances humor with impactful advocacy.
Mental Health: A Personal and Shared Journey
While Zach’s content often brings a smile, his commitment to mental health is serious. “Honestly, it started as me trying to figure out what was going on with myself,” he admitted. “But what I found is that I’m not alone—and that’s what I wanted other Veterans to see too.”
Through personal experience and outreach, Zach learned that many Veterans struggle silently, particularly men who may not feel equipped to discuss mental health challenges. By opening that conversation publicly, he’s breaking down stigmas.
“Everyone has moments when mental health is the heaviest thing on their plate,” Zach noted. “I just wanted to disrupt that system a bit and show that you’re not the only one feeling this way.”
Supporting Veterans Beyond Advocacy
Zach’s platform also serves as a bridge for Veterans seeking resources, especially when it comes to disability benefits. He’s frequently approached by Veterans asking for guidance on where to start.
“The biggest thing I see is Veterans saying, ‘I don’t even know where to begin,’” he said. “And I get it—whether they’ve been out for two years or twenty, navigating the system can be overwhelming.”
That’s why Zach has partnered with REE Medical, helping Veterans access independent medical documentation to support their disability claims.
“I’ve worked with nonprofits and for-profits, but I haven’t come close to anyone who provides what REE Medical does,” Zach explained. “Their transparency and professionalism give me confidence when I refer someone.”
Breaking Barriers to Benefits
For Zach, it’s about ensuring Veterans have options. “Some want to try the process on their own, and that’s great,” he said. “But if they hit a wall, knowing there’s a resource like REE Medical—that’s empowering.”
With REE Medical’s compliance-first approach, Veterans receive accurate, independent medical documentation to support their disability claims. “You’d be amazed at what you might qualify for,” Zach added. “This can make a huge difference not just for you, but for your family.”
