FINANCIAL ADVANTAGE
Additional Benefits for Kentucky Veterans
Kentucky Veterans and their families may qualify for valuable benefits that can reduce property taxes, lower higher-education costs, and make homeownership more affordable. Understanding the Kentucky disabled Veteran benefits available to you—from property tax relief to dependent tuition waivers and VA-backed home loans—can help you make the most of the benefits you’ve earned through military service.
Tax Relief
perty Tax Benefits for Veterans in Kentucky
- Totally disabled Veterans may qualify for Kentucky's Homestead Exemption. Qualifying homeowners who have been classified as totally disabled can deduct Kentucky's homestead exemption from the assessed value of their primary residence before property taxes are calculated. For the 2025–2026 assessment years, the exemption is $49,100.
- Service-connected totally disabled Veterans receive simplified renewal requirements. While many homeowners qualifying through disability must provide continuing documentation, Kentucky exempts service-connected totally disabled Veterans from the annual filing requirement after their initial application has been approved. Applications are submitted through the local county Property Valuation Administrator.
Family Tuition Assistance
Education Benefits for Kentucky Veterans & Families
- Children and spouses of qualifying Kentucky Veterans may receive a tuition waiver. Kentucky's Dependent Tuition Waiver is available to eligible children, stepchildren, spouses, and un-remarried surviving spouses of qualifying Veterans. Eligibility includes families of Veterans who are 100% service-connected disabled, died on active duty, died directly from a service-connected disability, or meet certain other qualifying military circumstances.
- The waiver can cover tuition at qualifying Kentucky public schools. Approved students may use the benefit at eligible two-year, four-year, and vocational-technical institutions operated and funded by Kentucky. The waiver covers tuition only and does not pay for books, fees, room, or board. For children, the benefit generally ends when the student receives a degree or certificate, uses 45 months of classes, or reaches age 26, whichever applicable limit occurs first.
Home Financing
Home Loan Benefits for Kentucky Veterans
- Eligible Kentucky Veterans may be able to purchase a home without a down payment using a VA-backed loan. VA-backed purchase loans can help eligible Veterans and service members buy, build, or improve a primary residence. No down payment is generally required when the sales price isn't higher than the home's appraised value, subject to VA eligibility and lender underwriting requirements.
- VA-backed home loans don't require monthly private mortgage insurance. Eligible borrowers can benefit from no PMI or MIP, potentially competitive loan terms, limits on certain closing costs, and no penalty for paying the mortgage off early. The VA home loan benefit can also be reused when applicable eligibility and entitlement requirements are met.
