Tax Relief
Property Tax Benefits for Veterans in Kansas
- Disabled Veterans may qualify for a Kansas property tax refund. Kansas Veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 50% or greater may qualify for the state's Property Tax Relief Claim for Seniors and Disabled Veterans. The program refunds the increase between the qualifying homestead's base-year property tax and its property tax for the current claim year.
- Surviving spouses may also qualify for continued property tax relief. An eligible surviving spouse of a disabled Veteran who was receiving the benefit at the time of death may continue to qualify, subject to program requirements. For the 2025 tax year filed in 2026, applicants generally must have household income of $58,041 or less, and the home's appraised value cannot exceed $350,000 in the base year.
Family Tuition Assistance
Education Benefits for Kansas Veterans & Families
- Qualifying spouses and dependents can attend eligible Kansas public colleges without paying tuition and required fees. The Kansas Hero's Scholarship provides tuition and required-fee waivers for eligible spouses and dependents of certain deceased or disabled military service members. For military families, qualifying circumstances include a service member who died while serving, sustained a service-connected injury or disability that prevented continued military service, or is entitled to compensation for a service-connected disability of at least 80%.
- The scholarship can provide up to eight semesters of undergraduate tuition assistance. Awards apply to undergraduate study at eligible Kansas public postsecondary institutions. Students remain responsible for expenses outside covered tuition and required fees, and awards are subject to available legislative funding.
Home Financing
Home Loan Benefits for Kansas Veterans
- Eligible Kansas Veterans can use VA-backed loans to purchase a primary residence. VA-backed purchase loans can be used to buy, build, or improve a home. Eligible borrowers may be able to purchase without a down payment when the sales price does not exceed the appraised value, subject to VA eligibility and lender credit, income, and underwriting requirements.
- VA-backed mortgages don't require monthly private mortgage insurance. Eligible Veterans can benefit from no PMI or MIP, potentially competitive loan terms, limits on certain closing costs, and no penalty for paying the mortgage off early. The VA home loan benefit can also be used again when eligibility and entitlement requirements are met.
