Tax Relief
Property Tax Exemptions for Veterans in Connecticut
- Veterans with a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability can receive a full property tax exemption. Connecticut requires municipalities to exempt a qualifying primary residence or motor vehicle for resident Veterans whom the VA has determined to have a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability. If the Veteran owns neither a dwelling nor a vehicle, the exemption may generally apply to qualifying property owned by a spouse with whom the Veteran resides.
- Connecticut provides additional property tax relief to other qualifying Veterans. Certain honorably discharged wartime Veterans and qualifying retirees receive a basic property tax exemption, while Veterans who meet income requirements may qualify for an additional exemption. Veterans with qualifying service-connected disabilities may also receive enhanced exemptions based on the severity of their disability.
Family Tuition Assistance
Education Benefits for Connecticut Veterans & Families
- Qualifying Veterans can receive a tuition waiver at Connecticut public colleges and universities. Connecticut waives tuition for eligible Veterans attending public higher-education institutions, including the University of Connecticut and Connecticut State Colleges and Universities. The waiver applies to qualifying tuition, while expenses such as books, certain fees, parking, and room and board aren't covered.
- Connecticut National Guard members also receive substantial college benefits. Active members of the Connecticut National Guard can receive tuition waivers at Connecticut public colleges and universities. A new law signed in June 2026 expands the benefit to include mandatory college fees for active Guard members enrolled at CT State, CSCU, or UConn.
Home Financing
Home Loan Benefits for Connecticut Veterans
- Connecticut offers a dedicated Military Mortgage Option for Veterans and service members. CHFA's Military Mortgage Option provides below-market mortgages to qualifying U.S. military personnel, including Veterans, Active Duty members, reservists and certain unmarried surviving spouses or civil union partners. Eligible borrowers must meet CHFA income, sales-price, credit and other program requirements.
- Qualifying military homebuyers may also receive down-payment assistance. The Military Mortgage Option can be combined with CHFA's Downpayment Assistance Program, helping eligible borrowers cover some of the upfront costs associated with purchasing a home. CHFA also provides an additional 0.25 percentage-point interest-rate reduction for eligible applicants purchasing in federally designated Targeted Areas, although available discounts cannot be combined.
