Additional Benefits For Alaska Veterans
Alaska Veterans and their families may qualify for valuable state benefits that can lower property taxes, reduce the cost of higher education, and make homeownership more affordable. Understanding the Alaska disabled Veteran benefits available to you—from property tax exemptions to family tuition waivers and Veteran mortgage programs—can help you make the most of the benefits you’ve earned through military service.
Tax Relief
Property Tax Exemptions for Veterans in Alaska
- Disabled Veterans can receive a property tax exemption on the first $150,000 of their home's assessed value. Alaska law requires municipalities that levy property taxes to exempt the first $150,000 of assessed value of the primary residence and permanent place of abode of a qualifying disabled Veteran. The Veteran generally must have a service-connected disability rating of 50% or higher.
- The exemption can continue for a qualifying surviving spouse. Under Alaska law, the property tax exemption can extend to a surviving spouse who is at least 60 years old when the deceased Veteran qualified for the exemption. Municipalities may also adopt broader provisions for certain surviving spouses, so Veterans and families should verify the specific rules and filing deadlines with their local assessor.
Family Tuition Assistance
Education Benefits for Alaska Veterans & Families
- Eligible spouses and dependents can have undergraduate tuition and fees waived. Alaska's Veterans' Dependent Tuition Waiver Program provides a waiver of undergraduate tuition and fees through the University of Alaska system for qualifying spouses and dependents of armed forces members who were Alaska residents and died in the line of duty, were killed in action, or were listed by the Department of Defense as prisoners of war.
- Alaska National Guard members can receive up to 100% tuition assistance. Eligible Alaska Army and Air National Guard members may receive up to 100% tuition assistance at University of Alaska system schools. Members may also qualify for federal tuition assistance, providing another potential way to reduce the cost of earning a degree or credential.
Home Financing
Home Loan Benefits for Alaska Veterans
- Alaska operates a dedicated Veterans Mortgage Program. The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) offers mortgage financing specifically for qualified Veterans, including financing options for single-family homes and certain qualifying multi-family properties. AHFC's current 2026 loan programs include both its Veterans Mortgage Program and Veterans First Home Limited financing.
- Qualified Veterans may receive an additional interest-rate reduction. AHFC states that qualifying Veterans can receive a 1% interest-rate reduction on the first $50,000 of the loan amount when they meet the State Veteran income limits. AHFC also offers other potential reductions for qualifying low-to-moderate-income borrowers and energy-efficient properties. Program combinations and eligibility restrictions apply.
