Is a Handicap Placard Right For You?

While the requirements for a vehicle handicap placard can vary greatly from state to state, Veterans can generally expect to be eligible for a placard if they:

  • Cannot walk 200 feet without stopping to rest
  • Cannot walk without the use of an assistive device
  • Experience severely limited mobility due to a neurologic, arthritic, or orthopedic condition
  • Have a cardiac condition that creates functional limitations classified in severity as Class III or Class IV according to standards set by the American Heart Association
  • Restricted by lung disease and forced (respiratory) expiratory volume for one second, when measured by spirometry, is less than one liter, or the arterial oxygen tension is less than 60 mm/hg on room air at rest.
  • Rely on portable oxygen
